100% Heritage Berkshire "Kurobuta" Pork

100% Heritage Berkshire "Kurobuta" Pork

For over 300 years, Berkshire hogs have been recognized for their amazing meat quality.  Known as “kurobuta” in Japan, the superior taste of Berkshire pork is as prized as Kobe beef.  As its beef counterpart, Berkshire pork boasts beautiful marbling and superb moist meat texture.  However, in America over the last 20 years, consumers have become more concerned about fat intake, and the pork industry responded by breeding pigs to be leaner.  Compared to pigs from the 1950’s, today’s pigs contain 75% less fat resulting in a dry and bland tasting product.  Lately, there has been an increasing demand for a more flavorful pork product, and therefore the reemergence of the Berkshire breed.

In 2001 Heritage Pork International, LLC began working with the American Berkshire Association and local farmers in Iowa and Minnesota to market Berkshire hogs.  The consumer interest was overwhelming.  The name Berkshire was quickly recognized and the demand increased dramatically.  We saw the need for a more organized and customer-driven program.  In 2007, the Heritage Berkshire Program was launched to provide quality control and professional service. Because we handle the entire process from the farm to processing to packaging and quality inspection, we are able to offer a consistent steady supply of the highest quality Berkshire pork.
